The Department of Commerce, specifically the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is seeking information on potential sources for a fiber-coupled widely tunable diode laser system intended for interferometric displacement measurement in optomechanical systems. The system must meet specific technical specifications including a tuning range of at least 160 nm, wavelength accuracy of less than 2 pm, and a minimum output power of 10 milliwatts at 1550 nm, among others. This procurement is critical for developing measurement standards for mass and force metrology.

The purpose of this sources sought notice is to conduct market research and identify potential sources of commercial products/services that satisfy the Government’s anticipated needs.
BACKGROUND The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Mass and Force Group, Small Mass and Force Metrology Project requires a fiber-coupled widely tunable diode laser system for interferometric displacement measurement in optomechanical systems. The laser will be used to develop measurement standards for mass and force metrology. This activity is critical to the NIST mission to disseminate the units of measurement within the International System of Units. NIST is seeking information from sources that may be capable of providing a fiber-coupled widely tunable diode laser system that will achieve the
objectives described above, and meet the following essential minimum required technical specifications: System must provide turnkey tunable fiber-coupled laser system. System must provide laser wavelength tuning range of no less than 160 nm that includes the wavelength 1550 nm. System must deliver polarized light to a polarization-maintaining fiber with an FC-APC connector. System provide wavelength accuracy of less than 2 pm. System must provide wavelength continuous scanning and a scan rate of greater than 150 nm per second. System must maintain output power of 10 milliwatts at 1550 nm. System must include built-in coherence control to broaden linewidth to greater than 30 MHz without mode-hopping. System must support laser linewidth of less than 70 kHz. System must provide spontaneous self emission ratio greater than 60 dB, and SMSR greater than 50 dB. System must be warranted for a minimum period of 1 year from acceptance.
